Inpatient Services

Inpatient Alcohol and Drug Detoxification Programs are offered at the Cornerstone of Medical Arts Center and at Cornerstone of Rhinebeck, NY. These inpatient units admit clients requiring medically supervised detoxification from alcohol and drugs. These 24-hour units operate seven days a week and provide comprehensive evaluation, medical, nursing and clinical services.

Upon admission physical problems requiring immediate attention are stabilized and withdrawal symptoms are monitored and medicated as needed. Following an individualized treatment plan with the guidance of a certified addictions clinician, clients participate in individual and group therapy, relapse prevention, educational seminars and 12-step programs which include daily meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous(AA), Cocaine Anonymous(CA), and/or Narcotics Anonymous(NA).

Cornerstone's detoxification programs offer variable lengths of stay depending on individual need. When medically stable, clients are discharged to the next appropriate level of care, as determined by a thorough, individual evaluation.

Inpatient Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs at Cornerstone of Medical Arts Center and at Cornerstone of Rhinebeck, NY approach client treatment with the premise that alcoholism and drug addiction are chronic diseases and that recovery is a lifelong process.

During the rehabilitation program, Cornerstone's multidisciplinary staff completes an extensive evaluation and develops an individualized treatment plan with the client. Treatment includes individual and group therapy, activity therapies, lectures and films, educational seminars, a nutritional program and meetings of 12-step programs(AA, CA, NA) as well as other self help groups. Special skill workshops and group activities help encourage interaction and a sense of belonging, which in turn build rapport and self-esteem. Relapse prevention focuses on the development of problem-solving skills and strategies which empower the client to develop coping skills for situations in which relapse could occur.

Lengths of stay in residential rehabilitation programs are variable according to individual need. As the client completes the inpatient rehabilitation program, staff develops a continuing care plan that includes weekly group sessions, attendance at self-help groups and referrals to outpatient programs as necessary.

Continuing Care: Each client who attends a Cornerstone program is provided with a discharge plan that includes referrals to other appropriate levels of inpatient and outpatient care both within and outside the Cornerstone Treatment Facilities Network. Cornerstone's goal is to help clients maintain abstinence by helping them to build a strong foundation for a lasting recovery through support systems, regular attendance at self-help groups, the development of relapse prevention strategies and re-establishment of positive relationships with significant others.

Outpatient Services

Chemical Dependency Outpatient Program is located at 116th Street in Manhattan. Cornerstone's Chemical Dependency Outpatient Program is designed to accommodate various schedules. Cornerstone stresses that recovery is a lifelong process. Strong emphasis is placed on continuing attendance at self-help groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous(AA), Narcotics Anonymous(NA), and Cocaine Anonymous(CA), as part of daily living in order to gain support for a sober and healthy life-style.

The Chemical Dependency Outpatient Programs are divided into three phases:

PHASE I consists of highly structured educational groups as well as individual therapy that provide basic knowledge about alcoholism and drug addiction. Phase I helps clients begin to understand, identify with and accept the disease concept of addiction, thereby enabling them to accept their illness and start to work toward their recovery.

PHASE II focuses on group therapy, which enables clients to identify their feelings and begin to connect them with their behaviors. Clients learn how to derive strength from the group as a unit and to use it as a support system. During this phase emphasis is also placed on continued education and relapse prevention.

PHASE III is designed to provide special support and insight into particular issues affecting clients and their ability to maintain their sobriety. Clinicians assist clients in identifying their specific needs and selecting the most appropriate treatment, including groups on women's, men's, HIV, family, career, nutritional, and ethnic issues.

Cornerstone Continuous Care of 116th Street in Manhattan offers evaluation and assessment, intensive outpatient treatment and continuing care. Because most people work and have other responsibilities, Cornerstone offers a flexible schedule with day and evening sessions.

During the initial phase of the program, the treatment focuses on denial and acceptance, addresses early recovery issues and helps clients develop coping mechanisms to create new sober life-styles. Phase I consists of a complete health assessment, clinical and psychiatric evaluation, educational sessions and intensive therapy with trained addiction professionals. Family members attend group and educational sessions and participate in a co-dependent group to focus on specific issues in a therapeutic environment.

In the second phase of the program clients attend group sessions to address various issues in early sobriety. Clients may also receive individual counseling as an adjunct to the regular program.

The last phase of the program includes relapse prevention and helps clients maintain their sobriety while lessening their dependence on a formal treatment program and reinforcing the use of self-help groups in the community.
